Painted in 1896 by Ivan Shishkin, The Forest Clearing is a landscape in oil on canvas. It shows an open space within a forest, with grass in the foreground and trees around its edges. An oak stands out among them and draws the eye. Shishkin was a Russian Realist painter and draughtsman, best known for his landscapes, and he was one of the founding members of the Peredvizhniki. Here, the subject is simple: trees, grass and the open ground between them.
On your wall: Its woodland subject suits a study, living room or hallway, and works well in calm spaces where natural, earthy interiors and a view of the outdoors are welcome.
