About this artwork

Thomas Moran painted this landscape in 1908, working in oil on canvas. It looks out over a river on Long Island, with cattle and a house set within the scene. Above them, the sky and its clouds take up a good part of the view. Moran is best known as an American painter of the Hudson River School, and this work belongs to the same landscape tradition, turning to a gentler corner of the country than the mountains he often painted.

On your wall: Its river, pastures and open sky suit living rooms, studies and hallways, especially where a calm, natural scene is wanted.
