Painted in 1892 during the Qing dynasty, this set of four hanging scrolls presents landscapes in colour on paper, each one connected to a season. Ren Yu belonged to the Four Rens, a family of prominent painters working in Shanghai in the late Qing period, and he was its youngest and most eccentric member. His work could be uneven, and the few high-quality paintings that remain suggest real artistic promise. He died young, before that promise was fulfilled. The collector Charles Lang Freer gave paintings by Ren Yu to the Cleveland Museum of Art, hoping to encourage its growing collection of Chinese painting.
On your wall: Suited to calm living rooms, studies or hallways, where the four landscapes can hang side by side and bring a quiet sense of the seasons.
