About this artwork

Turner made this work around 1832 in England, using watercolour and gouache over traces of graphite. The paper is ivory wove, laid down on board. The title tells us what to look for: the sun going down and the moon coming up, held together in one scene. Watercolour suits that kind of subject, since it lets colour and light blend and dissolve softly, while gouache adds body and brightness where it is needed. Turner was an English Romantic painter, and this sheet now belongs to the Art Institute of Chicago.

On your wall: Its subject of dusk and moonlight suits calm spaces such as bedrooms, reading corners, living rooms and quiet hallways, where a landscape with a gentle sense of time passing feels at home.
