This 1898 woodcut by Félix Vallotton is printed in black and white. It shows an interior where a stern-looking woman sits, while beside a chest of drawers a man covers his face with his hands. The words 'LE TRIOMPHE' are inscribed in the image, along with the artist's initials, 'FV'. The contrast between her composure and his evident distress gives the scene its tension. Vallotton was a Swiss and French artist and an important figure in the development of the modern woodcut, and the bold areas of dark and light here show why the medium suited him.
On your wall: Its strong black and white suits studies, hallways, living rooms and other calm, minimalist spaces where a quietly dramatic scene can hold the eye.
