Kazimir Malevich, 1915
A black square and a red square, set against a plain ground. Malevich reduces painting to two simple shapes and lets them hold the whole composition.

Painted in 1915, this oil on canvas belongs to Malevich's Suprematist work, the radically non-objective approach he introduced that same year. Its title names the two forms it contains: a black square and a red square. There is no landscape, figure or object to look for, only shape, colour and the space between them. The painting was shown at the Last Futurist Exhibition of Paintings 0,10, and later at the Große Berliner Kunstausstellung in 1927. Today it is held in the Museum of Modern Art.
On your wall: Its stark black and red geometry suits modern, minimalist interiors such as living rooms, studies and hallways, especially against white or pale neutral walls.
