This painting comes from an album made in Japan in 1841, during the Edo period. Tsubaki Chinzan worked in ink and colour on silk, a combination that suits fine botanical subjects. As the title tells us, the work is devoted to flowers and grasses, treated as a quiet study of plants rather than a grand scene. Chinzan was a painter in the nanga style, and his work sits within that tradition of Japanese painting. The album format means the picture was made to be viewed up close, one page at a time.
On your wall: Its gentle botanical subject suits calm spaces such as a study, hallway, bedroom or reading corner, particularly where natural, understated decor is preferred.

Tsubaki Chinzan was a Japanese painter who worked in the nanga style. He was born Tasuku and, as was common for artists of his tradition, worked under several art names, among them Hekiin Sambō, Kyūan, Shikyūan and Takukadō. His name is linked to this literati-inspired approach to painting.
