This is plate 49 from Ernst Haeckel's Kunstformen der Natur, produced between 1899 and 1904. It is a colour lithograph devoted to sea anemones, known in zoology as Actiniae. Haeckel was a German zoologist, marine biologist and artist, and the plate reflects both sides of that work: careful observation of living creatures and a designer's feeling for arrangement on the page. Here the image appears as a full book page, with its heading and caption text around the illustration, which gives it the character of a nineteenth-century natural history print.
On your wall: Its botanical-looking marine subject suits studies, libraries, living rooms and quiet hallways, especially where a natural history theme is welcome.

Ernst Haeckel was a German zoologist, naturalist, physician and professor who also worked as an artist. He described and named thousands of new species, drew a family tree linking all living things, and coined terms such as ecology and phylum. He helped introduce Charles Darwin's ideas to Germany.
