This is Plate 30 from Ernst Haeckel's Kunstformen der Natur, published between 1899 and 1904. It shows sea urchins and sand dollars, the group known as Echinidea, arranged on a black background. The dark ground sets off the rounded shells and their patterned surfaces. Haeckel was a zoologist and naturalist as well as an artist, and he named thousands of species. This plate brings together his scientific eye and his interest in the forms of living things.
On your wall: The black ground and detailed natural forms suit studies, libraries, living rooms and hallways, especially where a quiet, botanical or naturalist feel is wanted.
