Charles Marville photographed the Rue de la Ferronnerie, whose name means "street of ironwork" and dates back to 1229. In 1865 its ground floor held a café, a hotel and a men's clothing shop, while the apartments above housed some of the many people who had moved from the country into the city during the Second Empire. The image is an albumen print made from a wet collodion negative. Marville worked as Paris's official photographer from 1862 and is known for his careful records of the city's streets and architecture.
On your wall: Its black and white tones and city architecture suit a study, hallway, living room or office, especially in a home with a feeling for history and urban life.

Charles Marville was the pseudonym of Charles François Bossu, a French photographer who turned his camera mainly to architecture, landscapes and the city. He worked with both paper and glass negatives. He is best known for recording old Parisian quarters before they were demolished and rebuilt under Haussmann's modernisation, and in 1862 he was named official photographer of Paris.
