Farnham Maxwell Lyte, who lived in Pau, turned his camera on the road leading through the Pyrenees to the village of Eaux-Chaudes, known for its hot springs. The road had been completed only in 1849, and it made the journey far easier while offering dramatic views of the mountains. Pau was then a favourite holiday spot for British visitors and one of several French centres for photography. The image is an albumen print made from a wet collodion negative, and dates from around 1855.
On your wall: Its black and white tones and quiet mountain subject suit studies, hallways, libraries and calm living spaces where a considered landscape can be enjoyed at length.
