About this artwork
Eugène Atget turns his camera on an old corner of Paris where several streets meet. The sepia tones suit the scene: a hotel, a dye shop and a café-bar sit side by side, while a tall, weathered gable wall rises above them. Hoardings covered in posters fill part of the view, and one of them carries the date 24 May 1925. Atget was dedicated to recording the architecture and street scenes of Paris before modernisation changed them, and this photograph shows an ordinary corner with the same attention he gave to the city's more familiar sights.
On your wall: Its warm sepia tones and street-level detail suit a study, hallway, living room or café-style space, especially alongside traditional furniture and muted colours.

About Eugène Atget
Eugène Atget was a French photographer and self-styled flâneur who set out to record the architecture and street scenes of Paris before modernisation swept them away. He sold his pictures to artists and craftspeople, and later inspired the surrealists. Berenice Abbott first published most of his photographs after his death, when his reputation began to grow.
