About this artwork

Eugène Atget took up photography in the 1890s with a clear aim: to record the old buildings and streets of Paris before they were demolished. This narrow street is where the University of Paris was founded in 1112, and it ends at a church built in the 1600s. Atget sold his pictures not as art but as "documents for artists", meant to be used much as painters used photographic nude studies. That may explain why he worked early in the morning, when a street usually full of life stood quiet. The print is an albumen print, gold toned.

On your wall: Its quiet, monochrome street scene suits studies, hallways, libraries and calm living rooms, especially where a considered, historical touch is wanted.

About Eugène Atget

Eugène Atget was a French photographer and self-styled flâneur who set out to record the architecture and street scenes of Paris before modernisation swept them away. He sold his pictures to artists and craftspeople, and later inspired the surrealists. Berenice Abbott first published most of his photographs after his death, when his reputation began to grow.
