This portrait shows Alfred Stieglitz, the American photographer and promoter of modern art, with his wife Emmeline, who was also called Emily. The title tells us this is a restored version of the image. Stieglitz spent some fifty years working to have photography accepted as an art form, and he also ran galleries in New York that introduced many avant-garde European artists to America. Here, though, he appears as a sitter rather than as the one behind the camera, which makes it a more personal glimpse of his life.
On your wall: A black and white portrait suits a study, hallway or bedroom, and sits well in calm, understated rooms where a personal, human subject is welcome.
