Tsuchiya Koitsu made this woodblock print in 1937. It shows a pond in the rain, framed by willows, with a five-storied pagoda standing behind the trees. On the far bank, a small figure carries a red umbrella, the one bright note in a soft, damp landscape. The title places the scene at Kofukuji Temple in Nara. Koitsu belonged to the Shin-hanga movement, and trained for many years under the ukiyo-e master Kobayashi Kiyochika. Rain was a long-loved subject in Japanese prints, and here it gives the view a calm, reflective mood.
On your wall: Its muted, rainy tones and single touch of red suit a calm living room, a study or a bedroom, and sit well alongside natural materials and simple furnishings.

Tsuchiya Kōitsu was a Japanese artist associated with the Shin-hanga movement. He spent 19 years training under the ukiyo-e master Kobayashi Kiyochika, and his early work focused on scenes from the First Sino-Japanese War. In 1931, aged 60, he began working for the publisher Shōzaburō Watanabe. His later prints use light to deepen their emotional effect.
