Ōmori is part of a series called The Famous Places in the Eastern Capital, in which Utagawa Kuniyoshi turned to sites around Edo, present-day Tokyo, a popular subject for ukiyo-e prints in the early 1800s. Ōmori lay a few miles south of the city on Edo Bay and was known for growing nori, the seaweed wrapped around rice balls and sushi. Here two women gather it from the cultivation beds. One works with chopsticks, while the other gently rakes the seaweed into the baskets in their boat. The tip of another skiff and the beds stretching into the distance hint at how important this industry was. It is a colour woodblock print from Edo-period Japan.
On your wall: Its gentle subject of women at work on the water suits a kitchen, dining room or quiet hallway, particularly in homes that enjoy Japanese art.

Utagawa Kuniyoshi was a Japanese artist working in the ukiyo-e tradition, creating woodblock prints and paintings. He belonged to the Utagawa school and is counted among the last great masters of the style. His work stands as a late chapter in a celebrated Japanese tradition of printmaking and painting.
