Painted in oil on canvas in 1938, this work by Robert Delaunay was conceived as a decoration for the Salon des Tuileries. The title points to rhythm as its central idea, and Delaunay is known for exploring it through colour and geometry. As co-founder of Orphism with Sonia Delaunay, he favoured strong colours and geometric shapes, and his later work moved further towards abstraction. Today the painting belongs to the Musée d'art moderne de Paris.
On your wall: Well suited to a living room, studio or open-plan space where a modern, abstract piece can bring energy and a sense of movement to the walls.

Robert Delaunay was a French artist associated with the School of Paris. Together with his wife, Sonia Delaunay, and others, he co-founded Orphism, a movement known for strong colour and geometric shapes. His work shows a bold handling of colour and a clear delight in experimenting with depth and tone, and his later paintings grew more abstract.
