Painted in 1914, Birds is an oil painting on canvas by Franz Marc, a German painter and printmaker who stood at the heart of German Expressionism. As the title suggests, birds are the subject. Marc was a founding member of Der Blaue Reiter, the circle of artists whose name became tied to the journal they worked on together. This work belongs to the Expressionist movement and is part of the Lenbachhaus collection, where it is also listed within the so-called "degenerate art" collection.
On your wall: Its abstract, expressive treatment of a bird subject suits living rooms, studies and hallways where a modern piece with a sense of movement is welcome.

Franz Marc was a German painter and printmaker, counted among the key figures of German Expressionism. He was a founding member of Der Blaue Reiter, a journal whose name came to describe the wider circle of artists who worked together around it. His place in that movement is central to how he is remembered.
