About this artwork

This painting dates from 1912 and is by Hilma af Klint, a Swedish artist and mystic. Her work is regarded as among the first major abstract painting in Western art, and a good deal of it was made before the first purely abstract compositions by Kandinsky, Malevich and Mondrian. She belonged to The Five, a circle of women inspired by Theosophy, who valued trying to reach the "High Masters", often through séances. Her paintings can resemble diagrams, and she used them to give visual form to complex spiritual ideas.

On your wall: Its abstract character suits modern interiors, such as a living room, study or hallway, where a thoughtful, contemporary piece can sit comfortably.
