Painted in 1906, this is one of Vilhelm Hammershøi's interiors, and the title tells us its subject: a sitting room studied in sunlight. The room is Strandgade 30, a address he painted more than once. This picture is now in The David Collection, and a similar work by him hangs in Tate Britain. Hammershøi is known for poetic, subdued interiors and portraits. Rilke wrote in 1905 that his work is wide-ranging and slow, and rewards those who take their time with it.

Vilhelm Hammershøi was a Danish painter, sometimes written as Hammershoi in English. He is known for portraits and interiors with a poetic, subdued quality. In 1905 the poet Rainer Maria Rilke observed that his work is wide-ranging and unhurried, and always offers a way into talking about what matters in art.
