About this artwork

Puvis de Chavannes painted this as a smaller version of a mural of the same subject made for the Hôtel de Ville in Paris, where it has a companion piece called Winter. Here, bathers gather by a river beneath trees, while figures sit in a boat. The forms are simplified and flattened, and the colours are pale, giving the scene a dreamlike quality. A writer of the time saw it as full of joy, happiness and rest. Artists such as Seurat, Gauguin and Picasso were influenced by his anti-naturalistic style.

On your wall: Its pale, gentle tones and tranquil river scene suit calm spaces such as bedrooms, living rooms, reading corners or quiet hallways.
