About this artwork

Painted in 1908, this oil on canvas by Claude Monet looks along the Grand Canal in Venice towards the church of Santa Maria della Salute. It is one of six paintings of this view, and the group belongs to a wider series of Venetian scenes that Monet made during his only visit to the city. He began the works outdoors, in front of the subject, and finished them once back in France. Art historians generally see Monet as being at the height of his powers in these years. The painting is now in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

On your wall: A calm waterside view that suits living rooms, studies and hallways, and works well wherever you would like a sense of open air and distance.

About Claude Monet

Claude Monet was a French painter and a founder of Impressionism. He devoted his long career to expressing nature as he perceived it, working especially in outdoor landscape painting. The movement takes its name from his painting Impression, Sunrise, shown in 1874 at the First Impressionist Exhibition, which he helped initiate as an alternative to the Salon.
