This winter landscape by Claude Monet follows a snow-covered path running beside houses and bare trees. Figures walk along it, giving the scene a sense of everyday life in the cold season. Beyond them lies the Seine, with hills rising in the distance. The painting is in the Impressionist manner, and it belongs to Monet's views of the Seine at Lavacourt and to his winter subjects. Rather than dwelling on detail, it invites you to take in the whole scene as a single impression of light, season and place.
On your wall: Its wintry subject and soft, cool atmosphere suit calm living rooms, hallways and studies, especially where a quiet landscape is wanted.

Claude Monet was a French painter and a founder of Impressionism. He devoted his long career to expressing nature as he perceived it, working especially in outdoor landscape painting. The movement takes its name from his painting Impression, Sunrise, shown in 1874 at the First Impressionist Exhibition, which he helped initiate as an alternative to the Salon.
