Painted in 1896, this work shows the oldest part of Frederiksborg Castle, a building that Vilhelm Hammershøi returned to more than once in his work. The Danish painter is best known for subdued, poetic portraits and interiors, and that calm, hushed sensibility is a helpful way into looking at his view of the castle. Rainer Maria Rilke wrote that Hammershøi's art is slow and wide-ranging, and rewards those who take their time with it. This picture invites the same unhurried attention.
On your wall: Its architectural subject and muted, minimalist character suit a quiet study, a calm living room, a hallway or any restrained space where it can be looked at slowly.

Vilhelm Hammershøi was a Danish painter, sometimes written as Hammershoi in English. He is known for portraits and interiors with a poetic, subdued quality. In 1905 the poet Rainer Maria Rilke observed that his work is wide-ranging and unhurried, and always offers a way into talking about what matters in art.
