Henri Meunier made The Searchlights in 1917, during the First World War. The title points to anti-aircraft searchlights, the powerful beams used to scan the sky, and the work is linked to Belgium in that year. Meunier was a Belgian artist of the Belle Époque, active as a lithographer, etcher, illustrator, bookbinder and poster designer, with roots in Art Nouveau. This piece sits well alongside his other graphic work, and it will appeal to anyone drawn to early twentieth-century imagery and its distinctive sense of period.
On your wall: Suited to a study, hallway or living room where a vintage poster feel and a touch of twentieth-century history are welcome.
