About this artwork

This is a poster for Maurin Quina, made by Leonetto Cappiello in 1907 and printed in Paris by Vercasson & Cie. It is a colour lithograph on a large scale, measuring 159 by 114 centimetres, and the title names Le Puy, France. Cappiello is often called the father of modern advertising, and he was among the first poster artists to set bold figures against dark backgrounds, a clear break from the more painterly posters that came before. The work belongs to the French tradition of drinks advertising.

On your wall: Its poster character suits a kitchen, dining room, bar corner or home café, and it sits well in a study or hallway where vintage graphics are welcome.

About Leonetto Cappiello

Leonetto Cappiello was an Italian and French poster designer and painter who lived and worked mainly in Paris. He is often called the father of modern advertising. While earlier poster artists favoured a painterly look, he took the opposite path, setting bold figures against black backgrounds, a startling contrast to the posters that came before.
