About this artwork
This is a poster calendar for 1906, produced by the American illustrator Edward Penfield in 1905. Its subject is the automobile, which at the time was still a fairly new sight on the road, and it sits within the Art Nouveau treatment of motoring. It also belongs to a group of calendars Penfield made in poster form, and it carries something of the fashion of 1906. Penfield is often called the father of the American poster and was a leading figure in what is known as the Golden Age of American Illustration. His work remains important to the story of graphic design.

About Edward Penfield
Edward Penfield was an American illustrator who worked during what is often called the Golden Age of American Illustration. He is regarded as the father of the American poster, and his work appears in nearly every major book on American illustration or poster history. He also holds an important place in the development of graphic design.
