This is a poster by Jules Chéret, made for Au Phare de la Loire, a department store in Saint-Étienne. It belongs to the world of clothing and fashion retail advertising, and was printed as a colour lithograph at a large scale, roughly 125 by 88 centimetres. It was published in Paris by the Chaix printing house, which had taken over from Chéret's own press, and dates from the 1880s. Chéret is often called the father of the modern poster, and this sheet shows how he brought shopfront promotion onto the street.

His work in this field was so influential that he has often been called the father of the modern poster. His name remains closely tied to the colourful, eye-catching street posters of that era.
