About this artwork

Painted in 1878, this landscape by Ferdinand Hodler takes its title from willows at the Jonction, near Geneva. It is an oil painting on canvas and belongs to the Kunstsammlung Thomas Schmidheiny. Hodler was a Swiss painter, and his early work included landscapes in a realistic style, which is the period this picture belongs to. The title points the viewer towards trees at the water's edge, a quiet, everyday corner of the Genevan landscape.

On your wall: A calm riverside landscape like this suits living rooms, studies and hallways, especially where you would like a natural, understated view of trees and water.

Later he moved towards a personal form of Symbolism, which he called "parallelism". His work shows a clear shift from close observation to a more distinctive, individual style.
