About this artwork

Painted in 1892, this landscape by Thomas Moran takes us into Kanab Canyon in Utah. Mountains and trees are the main elements of the scene, and the title points to the mist that hangs over the canyon. Moran worked in oil on canvas, a medium that suits the soft, hazy atmosphere the title suggests. Moran was an American painter of the Hudson River School, known for landscapes that often turned to the Rocky Mountains. This work is part of the collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

On your wall: A calm, atmospheric landscape like this suits a living room, study or hallway, especially where you want a sense of open space and natural scenery.
