About this artwork

Daubigny painted this expansive landscape in 1855, in oil on fabric. The town of Villerville, on the Normandy coast, sits just to the right of centre. In the foreground, dark masses of rocky shore stand against streaks of bright light along the horizon. Daubigny was a pioneer of painting outdoors and a major influence on Claude Monet and the Impressionists. He brought a new kind of natural landscape to painting, built on outdoor studies of light, water and atmospheric conditions, and you can sense that attention to changing light here.

On your wall: Its dark foreground and bright horizon suit a living room, study or hallway where a calm, spacious coastal landscape can bring depth to the wall.

About Charles François Daubigny

Charles-François Daubigny was a French painter and a member of the Barbizon school. He is regarded as an important forerunner of Impressionism, and his place in that story is a large part of why his work still draws interest today. His paintings sit between the Barbizon tradition and the artists who followed.
