Louis Hayet, 1888
A pale dawn sky settles over the River Oise, its colours broken into tiny strokes that come together as you step back.

Louis Hayet painted this view of the River Oise at first light in 1888, in oil on canvas. He was an early practitioner of Neo-Impressionism, also known as Pointillism, in which small strokes or dots of paint sit side by side and blend in the eye from a distance. Here the pale sky and its reflection in the water are built from pink, orange, blue, yellow and green. Seen from further back, the strokes settle into the soft light of early morning, before the sun has fully risen.
On your wall: Its soft pinks, blues and greens suit calm spaces such as bedrooms, living rooms and quiet reading corners, where the gentle morning light can be enjoyed.

Louis Hayet was a French painter associated with Post-Impressionism, the movement that followed Impressionism and moved on from its concerns in new directions. His work belongs to that period of French art, and it offers a quiet, rewarding way to explore the era for anyone drawn to painting of this kind.
