Painted in oil on canvas in 1889, Rain is a landscape of a field in falling rain. Van Gogh made it while he was a voluntary patient at an asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. During his stay he returned many times to the view from his window, painting the fields and hills outside as they changed with the time of day and the weather. Rain belongs to that series of studies, in which the same outlook appears in different light and conditions. The work is now in the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
On your wall: Its landscape subject and weather-bound mood suit a calm living room, a study or a hallway, where it can invite a quiet pause.

Vincent van Gogh was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter, regarded as one of the most influential figures in Western art. In little over a decade he produced around 2,100 works, including about 860 oil paintings, most of them in his final two years. He is known for landscapes, still lifes and portraits, painted in bold colour with expressive, energetic brushwork.
