About this artwork

Kensett painted this oil on canvas in 1854, looking across the Saco River to Mount Chocorua, one of the most distinctive peaks in New Hampshire's White Mountains. The view is a distant one, so the mountain sits within the wider landscape rather than filling it. In the early 1850s, improved railroad service made the region easier to reach, and it became a favoured destination for tourists and artists who wanted to spend time in nature. Kensett, who was based in New York, painted several views of the White Mountains, and this is one of them.

On your wall: Its calm river and mountain view would sit well in a living room, study or hallway, especially where you want a quiet, natural focal point.
