About this artwork

Thomas Moran painted this view of Venice in watercolour in 1888. We look across the lagoon towards the city, where Santa Maria della Salute, the Campanile and the Doge's Palace rise along the waterfront. Sailing boats sit on the water in the foreground. The work is signed T. Moran and dated 1888. Moran was an American painter and printmaker of the Hudson River School, and here he turns his attention from the mountain landscapes he is often known for to a city meeting the water.

On your wall: Its lagoon subject and watercolour treatment suit calm spaces such as a living room, study or hallway, particularly where a light, airy view of the water is welcome.
