About this artwork

Arkhip Kuindzhi painted The North in 1879, working in oil on canvas. In the foreground, a rocky outcrop carries a handful of pine trees. Beyond it the land opens into a vast, flat green plain, crossed by a winding river that leads the eye towards the horizon. Above it all hangs a pale, pinkish sky. The painting is now in the Tretyakov Gallery. The composition sets the close, solid rock against the long, quiet expanse behind it.

On your wall: Its soft greens and pale pink sky suit calm living rooms, studies and bedrooms, especially where a wide, quiet landscape is wanted.
