About this artwork

Bierstadt visited Yosemite Valley in California in the summer of 1863 and made numerous sketches there. Back in his New York studio he worked from them to paint a number of grand views, including this one of the distant granite peak Mount Starr King. Here a lake, tall trees and shifting clouds frame the scene, while two small figures with a packhorse stand in the sunlit meadow. Their presence recalls that Indigenous peoples had lived in or visited the region for thousands of years. Pictures like this thrilled audiences in the East and helped encourage early efforts to protect natural wonders.

On your wall: Its soft light, open sky and green and golden tones would suit a living room, study or hallway where a calm, spacious landscape is welcome.
