About this artwork

Corot painted this large oil of the countryside around Rome, drawing on studies he had made outdoors: drawings and oil sketches. He lived in Rome from 1825 to 1828 and was drawn to the beauty of the Italian landscape, often sketching in the area. The composition is highly structured, with forms leading the eye into the distance along a series of diagonals. This approach is characteristic of his early style and recalls the classical landscapes of the 17th-century painter Nicholas Poussin. The painting dates from around 1830 to 1831.

On your wall: Its calm, ordered view of open countryside suits a study, living room or hallway, where a quiet landscape can give the eye room to travel.

About Jean Baptiste Camille Corot

Camille Corot was a French painter of landscapes and portraits, and also made etchings. He is regarded as a pivotal figure in landscape painting. His large body of work drew on the Neo-Classical tradition while also anticipating the outdoor painting that Impressionism would later embrace, which gives his pictures a quiet place between two eras.
