Martin Johnson Heade, 1873
A single branch of apple blossom rests on a tabletop against a plain wall, a quiet and spare study from Martin Johnson Heade.

Painted in oil on canvas in 1873, this work shows one branch of apple blossoms propped on a tabletop and held up by a bare, undecorated wall. It is a restrained composition, with little to distract from the flowers themselves. Martin Johnson Heade painted around 150 floral still lifes over his long career, and this one is notably stark by comparison. It now belongs to the Cleveland Museum of Art.
On your wall: Its simple composition and floral subject suit calm spaces such as a bedroom, hallway, study or dining room, where a quiet botanical picture can sit comfortably.

Martin Johnson Heade was an American painter best known for his salt marsh landscapes and seascapes, as well as his hummingbirds, often shown with orchids, and his lotus blossoms and other still lifes. His work grew from the Romantic outlook of his day, yet art historians see it as a clear departure from that of his contemporaries.
