This is plate 89 from Ernst Haeckel's Kunstformen der Natur, made in 1904 as a chromolithograph. Seven chelonians share the page. Two sea turtles, the Leatherback and the Hawksbill, swim across the upper part. Below them are an Argentine Snake-necked Turtle, a mata mata, a Galápagos Tortoise, a Geometric Tortoise and a Common Snapping Turtle. The plate sets very different shell shapes and body forms side by side, so you can compare how varied these reptiles are.
On your wall: Its natural history subject suits a study, hallway or reading corner, and it sits comfortably in a living room alongside other botanical and zoological prints.
