Martin Johnson Heade painted this oil on canvas in 1873. By then he had made three trips to Central and South America, and those journeys fed into a large body of work devoted to birds and flowers, orchids above all, set in tropical surroundings. Here the orchids take centre stage. Heade was an American painter, and this work belongs to that long-running interest in blossoms and the lush settings in which they grow.
On your wall: Its floral subject and tropical theme suit a living room, hallway or bedroom, particularly where you would like a touch of botanical colour.

Martin Johnson Heade was an American painter best known for his salt marsh landscapes and seascapes, as well as his hummingbirds, often shown with orchids, and his lotus blossoms and other still lifes. His work grew from the Romantic outlook of his day, yet art historians see it as a clear departure from that of his contemporaries.
