Watanabe Shikō was fascinated by scientific realism, an interest that grew from his exchanges with his patron Konoe Iehiro. Here he brings that close attention to plants together with bold ink outlines and decorative gold and silver. The result was an inventive style that influenced many fellow painters in Kyoto. The work is a pair of six-panel folding screens from the early to mid-1700s, made in Japan during the Edo period with ink, colour, gold, silver and gilding on paper. As the title suggests, it brings together the flowers and trees of the four seasons.
On your wall: Its seasonal plants and warm touches of gold and silver suit living rooms, dining areas and calm entrance halls, where its detail can be appreciated at leisure.
