About this artwork

This work from Edo-period Japan, dated to about 1634, began as a poetry sheet and was later mounted as an album leaf. Ink, colour and gold on paper are combined with a handwritten poem. The verse comes from The Tales of Ise, a 10th-century poetic narrative about love. It sets autumn, with its crying wild geese and flowering chrysanthemums, beside the pleasure of living by the sea in spring on the Beach of Sumiyoshi. The title points to that shoreline, and the poem gives the image its mood. Tawaraya Sōtatsu, a painter of the Rinpa school, is the artist.

On your wall: With its gold and gentle seaside theme, it would sit well in a calm study, a reading corner or a bedroom where a thoughtful, softly lit picture is welcome.
