Business is a 1921 work by the American artist Charles Demuth, now in the Art Institute of Chicago. Demuth is known as a painter who worked mainly in watercolour, turned to oils late in his career, and became associated with Precisionism, a style of clear, carefully ordered forms. The title points to the world of commerce, and it gives you a way into the picture before you begin to look at its shapes and arrangement. It is a piece that rewards a slow, attentive look.
On your wall: Its modern, abstract character suits a study, office or living room where a considered, contemporary piece can anchor the space.
