Painted in 1928 by the American artist Charles Demuth, this work is also known as The Figure 5 in Gold. It belongs to Precisionism, the style Demuth developed when he turned to oils late in his career, and it has been described as showing the influence of Futurism and Cubism. Though catalogued as a portrait, it also depicts a fire engine. Oil paint on cardboard gives the surface its crisp, graphic character. Today the painting is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
On your wall: Its bold geometry and strong graphic energy suit a living room, study or hallway where a modern, abstract piece can bring movement and focus.
