About this artwork

This is a portrait from 1922 by Paul Klee, the Swiss-born German artist whose individual style drew on expressionism, cubism and surrealism. The title points to a smith, and the work centres on a human figure rather than a landscape or still life. It was made with oil paint and watercolour on cardboard, a combination that brings together the density of oil and the transparency of watercolour. Today the work belongs to the collection of the Musée National d'Art Moderne, where it is also held.

On your wall: Its modern, abstract character suits a study, living room or hallway where a figure portrait with a quiet, thoughtful presence can sit among plain, uncluttered surroundings.

About Paul Klee

Paul Klee was a Swiss-born German artist whose style was entirely his own. Over his career he drew on several movements, including expressionism, cubism and surrealism, and blended these influences into work that remains unmistakably his. For a Swiss customer, there is something pleasing in seeing a compatriot's imagination so distinctively at play.
