Paul Klee painted Ships in the Dark in 1927, working in oil on canvas. It is an abstract piece, so it does not offer a literal scene; the title gives a starting point, and you are free to find your own vessels and your own sense of night within it. Klee was Swiss-born and German, and his highly individual style drew on expressionism, cubism and surrealism. Today the painting is held at Tate Modern.
On your wall: Its dark, suggestive mood and abstract character suit a study, living room or hallway where a thoughtful, modern piece can reward a second look.

Text based on Tate Modern.
Paul Klee was a Swiss-born German artist whose style was entirely his own. Over his career he drew on several movements, including expressionism, cubism and surrealism, and blended these influences into work that remains unmistakably his. For a Swiss customer, there is something pleasing in seeing a compatriot's imagination so distinctively at play.
