Painted in 1910, this still life shows a bouquet of flowers, a subject Henri Rousseau approached in the Naïve, or Primitive, manner for which he is known. Rousseau, a French post-Impressionist, was nicknamed Le Douanier because he worked as a toll and tax collector. He began painting seriously in his early forties and left that job at forty-nine to paint full-time. This bouquet is one of his still lifes and is now held in a private collection.
On your wall: A bouquet of flowers brings a natural, gentle focal point to living rooms, hallways and bedrooms, and sits comfortably in both modern and more traditional interiors.

Henri Rousseau was a French post-Impressionist painter who worked in the Naïve, or Primitive, manner. He was nicknamed Le Douanier, a playful nod to his job collecting tolls and taxes. He began painting seriously in his early forties and, by the age of 49, had retired from that work to devote himself fully to art.
