Campanariae is plate 45 from Ernst Haeckel's Kunstformen der Natur, published in 1904. The plate brings together a group of small marine colonies, each shown with its feeding polyps, known as hydranths, and its reproductive buds, called gonophores. One colony also has defensive polyps, and one species appears as a free-swimming medusa. Among those pictured are Obelia geniculata, Obelia lucifera, Clytia hemisphaerica and Opercularella lacerata. Each is set out as a separate study, so the eye moves from one branching form to the next. Haeckel was a zoologist and marine biologist as well as an artist, and the plate reflects that dual interest in close observation and graceful arrangement.
On your wall: Its fine, branching forms and natural-history subject suit a study, library, hallway or calm living space, especially alongside other botanical or scientific prints.
