About this artwork

This plate by John James Audubon shows seven Carolina Parakeets perched among branches hung with seed pods. The background is plain white, so the birds and foliage stand out clearly. It is a hand-coloured engraving, made as part of The Birds of America, Audubon's plan to record the bird species of North America in pictures. The Carolina Parakeet is now extinct, but it was still living when Audubon illustrated it, which gives the plate a quiet significance alongside its botanical detail.

On your wall: Its white ground and natural subject suit a study, hallway, sitting room or reading corner, especially where botanical or nature-themed prints are already displayed.
